Is there a difference between Pirates, Privateers, Buccaneers, and Corsairs?

This collection of biographies might be an odd one for the MegaMilitary project, but once you read them, you will get an idea how most of these high-seas “thieves” had a tremendous impact on history, the involvement with colonial powers using and abusing them for their personal political and economic interests.

Privateers were even officially sanctioned and protected by their sponsoring nation and in return had to share a certain amount of the plunders they gained.
