Saluting is a major part of the military discipline. Every military service in the world has a very strict regulatory framework about this issue and it might be surprising to some on how complicated or complex this can be. In 1949 the U.S. Army used a comic book approach creating the field manual FM 21-14 to reach semi-literate recruits who were turned into soldiers and teach them on how to salute, when to salute, whom to salute and other military courtesy.
